Asbestos Floor Tile and Sheet Vinyl Removal in Seattle

Typical cost in Seattle

  • One bathroom or laundry floor, about 50 to 100 sq ft$1,200 – $3,000+
  • One kitchen or large room, about 150 to 300 sq ft$1,800 – $5,000+
  • Several rooms, about 500 to 1,000 sq ft$4,000 – $12,000+

Thinking about replacing an old vinyl floor? The tile, the black adhesive under it and the backing of sheet vinyl can all contain asbestos. Seattle Asbestos Removal takes floors up once a sample is positive. One room can have carpet over vinyl over an older tile, so the first job is counting the layers.

What matters is the material’s condition. PSCAA puts vinyl asbestos tile and mastic on its nonfriable list, and nonfriable removal needs no PSCAA notice as long as nobody sands, grinds or saws the material. We work across Seattle, White Center and Tukwila.

Flooring options

Vinyl tile

Lift it, do not break it. Whole tiles can come up without a PSCAA notice. Dust stays under control, and every piece goes into a container marked nonfriable asbestos waste.

Black adhesive

The mastic is sampled apart from the tile on top of it. PSCAA’s method for removing nonfriable material excludes sanding, grinding and sawing, so grinding the adhesive off the subfloor is out.

Sheet vinyl and its backing

Sheet vinyl rides on a backing of felt or paper, and that layer decides the rules. PSCAA counts a backing as friable when hand pressure can reduce it to powder while dry. Once 48 square feet or more is removed in a calendar year, a notice is due. A lab sample answers which case applies.

Layered floors

A floor can have carpet over vinyl over another layer.

Planning a floor job

Floor jobs are small in area and big in details.

Subfloor condition

With the tile and mastic gone, the subfloor is exposed. Damage, moisture and uneven spots show up then, so leave some room in the budget and the schedule for them.

Dust control

Lifting old flooring can throw dust, so the room is closed off and material is lifted whole wherever possible.

Where the waste goes

Nonfriable waste goes straight into a labeled container. PSCAA tells owners to call a local disposal company for instructions, and Seattle code bars hazardous material from the garbage and recycling.

If the same room is getting a new ceiling, popcorn ceiling removal covers that side. The sampling that comes before any floor job is on asbestos testing and surveys. For everything else, from pipe wrap to teardowns, the Seattle Asbestos Removal home page lists the full range of work we do across the city.
